Project Overview

UC Davis California Natural Primate Research Center (CNPRC) Central Plant & Energy Efficiency Project, Davis, California

Syska served as the prime engineer to the University with subconsultants covering architecture, structural, and civil design services as well as cost estimating activities. The CNPRC central plant and energy efficiency project had, as its primary goal, to migrate the heating infrastructure for the primate research campus from high pressure steam to low temperature hot water. Remaining process steam loads for sterilization and cage wash activities would be fully electrified in the process. The steam to hot water conversion synchronized well with a campus heating infrastructure that was badly in need of rejuvenation. To satisfy a portion of the heating demand for the campus, flat plate solar collectors which had been donated to the University were utilized as the evaporator energy source of a water source heat pump system to generate hot water at adequate temperatures for space heating. Excess energy generation from the solar collector and heat pump system will be stored in an atmospheric 150,000 gallon hot water thermal energy storage tank for use at a later time of higher demand and lower solar radiation.  To satisfy the remainder of the facility heating load, hot water boilers were utilized which are capable of firing on digester gas from and adjacent, University owned, anaerobic digester facility.

Syska performed energy modeling of the solar thermal and heat pump system which will allow the University to apply for an $800,000 rebate through the California Solar Initiative solar thermal program.
