Project Overview

Project Waymo, Lancaster, Texas

Project Waymo created a nine-acre autonomous trucking campus for Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, Inc., which is expanding its fleet of self-driving trucks. Syska Hennessy provided full mechanical, electrical and plumbing design of the new facility, which serves as a central launching point for the company’s southwest operations and includes 10 truck bays, diesel fueling stations, six EV charging stations and 36 workstations.

Syska’s engineering design included HVAC scope of rooftop air-handling units for the office component, and heating and ventilation units for exhaust and gas detection for the service bays.  The electrical design included emergency power, central UPS, and support for other disciplines.

Project challenges included the need for exhaust control running in the bays, and for a safe, conditioned environment for people walking back and forth from the office areas to the bays. Syska also had to provide extensive cabling for the IT room and provide high levels of resiliency. As part of the team’s effort to achieve LEED certification, Syska designed configurations for the EV charging stations, lighting controls, and individual HVAC controls to strict specifications.

This first-of-its-kind project supports Waymo’s heavy-duty payload capacity for operations and research and development.
