Project Overview

Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center, New York, NY

The project involved completely renovating a historic 135,000 square foot structure, originally constructed in 1898, to create a modern, community-focused facility. This new development features a comprehensive range of services such as inpatient care, detoxification, rehabilitation, as well as specialized beds for intensive crisis situations and respite care. The renovation included the installation of entirely new Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection (MEPFP) and Fire Alarm systems. Key additions also comprised a pre-assembled chiller plant, air handling units, and a dedicated emergency generator plant.

Project Highlights:

  1. Sinks, toilets, diffusers, shower heads, doors were specified to be ligature resistant, anti- barricade to create a safe environment for both patients and staff.
  2. We employed Openspace software during the Construction Administration phase. This allowed the project team and client to visualize construction progress via 360 degree pictures taken by our team members while they were simply walking the site. Subsequently, the entire team had access to web interface allowing navigation, views, punchlist notes/comments and all with an easy interface similar to Google Earth.
  3. Patient safety enhancements include remote control and override of patient room electrical distribution (receptacles and lighting) within individual rooms via a touch screen located in the nurse station. Additionally, certain rooms were provided with plumbing isolation valves outside of the room in order to address ‘polydipsia’, a medical condition where a patient may end up compulsively drinking to a point of harming themselves.
  4. In case of a power outage or a part of a system failure, HVAC supporting inpatient floors were prioritized to maintain operation from the emergency generators, increasing resiliency.
  5. Lessons from COVID response were implemented into the design of this project which included the provision to create negative pressure patient rooms as well as easy conversion to med surge within portions of the building.
