Long Beach Airport Phase II Terminal Redevelopment & Area Improvements, Long Beach, California

For the Phase II Terminal Redevelopment and Area Improvements at Long Beach Airport Syska Hennessy designed engineering systems for new and renovated facilities. This included renovation and recommissioning of the historic terminal building, constructed in the 1940s. The improvements were designed to improve passenger flow throughout the terminal and create hospitality space. The project goals included operationally and energy-efficient design that maintains the architectural aesthetics of the Phase 1 improvements and enhances the character of the historic building. 

Enhancements include a new 6,200 sf in-line baggage security screening system facility. The baggage claim area was improved with new public restrooms, baggage service office, and new canopies. The project included construction of ticketing facilities to include Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) and airline ticket offices. 

The terminal was upgraded with pre-security concessions, a “meet & greet“ plaza and restrooms. This includes construction of the core and shell for new pre-security concessions. 

Existing service counters and support offices in the Rental Car Customer Transaction Services area were relocated back into the Historic Terminal Building. The project also included construction of new 300,000 sf surface parking lot to be used for rental car storage and queuing. Improvements are being made to the roadway and signage network within the terminal area, including relocation of the entrance. A new ground transportation center was provided including a new valet stand, surface vehicular parking for valet, skycap stands, facilities for taxis, buses and bicycles.
