Project Overview

City of San Antonio, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, San Antonio, Texas

The City of San Antonio embarked on improvements to the Convention Center via renovations and additions. These additions encompassed approximately a 726,000 sf expansion of the existing convention center, including exhibit halls, multi-purpose room, ballroom, meeting rooms, administrative support spaces, a loading dock and kitchens. The project included the renovation of approximately 50,000 sf and the demolition of the original West Building.

Syska Hennessy worked alongside the San Antonio Office of Sustainability to evaluate energy efficiency measures and their associated savings. This information was used to invest $6 million in incentives for the project. Additional skylights were added in the ballroom pre-function area.

A new 22” chilled water services for the expansion from San Antonio Water Service (SAWS) was provided; the loops are separated by redundant heat exchangers. SAWS was undergoing the process of discontinuing district steam services, so the entire conversion center was upgraded to be served by four new gas boiler plants. Air is delivered via fan array AHUs with the ability to turn down below 30% of their CFM in order to provide energy savings during low-load conditions.
