Project Overview

Audrey Irmas Pavilion, Los Angeles, California

The Audrey Irmas Pavilion is an inspiring gathering place for the entire community, designed to host religious and cultural activities and performances on Wilshire Boulevard directly adjacent to the historic sanctuary of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Koreatown.

The first building in Los Angeles from Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas and OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu, with collaboration by consulting architects Gruen Associates, the Audrey Irmas Pavilion includes a chapel and terrace, a grand ballroom, meeting rooms, performance spaces, a rooftop sky garden with panoramic views, and a world-class catering kitchen.

This revolutionary new building is also home to The Annenberg Foundation’s groundbreaking new initiative for purposeful aging. The center is open to the community at large and will seek to inspire a path to purposeful aging through wellness, creativity, tech exploration, social connections, community engagement, financial education and more.

As the elevator consultant, Syska Hennessy was responsible for the analysis and review of all elevator systems in the Pavilion. Determining optimum elevator configuration included interfacing with the various user groups and performing an analysis to determine adequacy of elevators based on the pedestrian and service demands. We ran algorithms that included elevator run times, quantities of units and appropriate capacities. Additionally, our VT team developed the project specifications for the elevators, adapting the equipment requirements for the exterior exposure at the roof top terrace and interfacing acoustical requirements given adjacency of user areas.
