Syska’s SENSE (Syska Employee Network of Support and Education) program is a critical component of our corporate culture. It supports learning, provides guidance for professional development, and promotes collaboration to build on Syska’s culture of technical excellence. Let’s take a detailed look at how it works.

We’ve identified three “pillars” of the program. One is professional development. To support this pillar, SENSE provides opportunities to develop leadership skills through networking and collaboration with peers at all levels. The programs and presentations we arrange enable our colleagues to learn about career progression and receive advice from senior employees.

The second pillar is technical assistance. This involves the sharing of technical knowledge and resources, which we foster through webinars and events. Participants build problem-solving skills and other competencies to excel in our industry.

The third pillar is social engagement. Our social engagement events promote networking across all Syska offices and with other A/E/C firms and allow us to give back to the community through philanthropy.

SHAPE’s purpose as an Employee Resource Group (ERG) is to support Syska’s initiative to develop our work with technically diverse perspectives and cultivate inclusive and diverse teams. Employees are vital to help promote the Syska culture. We are looking for people who embody the traits we value as an organization

Syska strives to make authentic connections with all backgrounds that will enrich our talent base and internal strengths. We inspire individuals to achieve their full potential by being actively involved within our communities. We provide an inclusive workforce by supporting our managers and each other to become better team members, leaders, and communicators. Here at Syska, we continuously seek opportunities to better understand our diverse strengths and values and integrate those qualities by providing opportunities for continuous growth and development firm wide.

Once on board, we support our employees with ongoing professional and technical training, opportunities for continuing their education, and mentoring. We also encourage our professionals to design their careers according to the roles and areas that interest them and promote professional equality through our SHAPE program.

Syska Hennessy believes that by investing in continuous professional development, it will empower team members to create a framework for a rewarding career. This investment in learning broadens the spectrum and depth of talent, fostering knowledge sharing and contributes to the overall success of the firm. The first step in development starts with the time honored and industry leading Engineer Development Training (EDT) Program.

In general, most recently graduated engineering students with little or no experience in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry are invited to participate in Syska’s one year EDT Program. This program is a trademark of our commitment to the development and education of young engineers through cross-training in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, energy modeling, LEED, sustainability, commissioning, technology and business practices, all items that make well-rounded engineers.

EDT team members will regularly visit job sites to experience projects underway, while being mentored by more senior engineers and working with peers. The value of mentoring and technical training shortens the “learning curve”, increases performance and job satisfaction, maximizes the effectiveness of our organization all while achieving the firm’s strategic goals and objectives.

This program utilizes Syska’s technical capabilities, including online training courses, technical training through Webinar sessions and weekly meetings. The use of our technology will ensure that all EDTs have an opportunity to actively participate in the program, regardless of their location.

Resume Tips

Here are some tips put together by past interns to help you get started.

Be sure to include the basics and make sure your personal information is up to date.

Highlight skills relevant to the role you are applying for.

List any working knowledge of relevant engineering software (examples include AutoCad, Revit, etc.) For business professionals be sure to include applicable information (for example a Marketing candidate will want to show use of Adobe, while an accounting professional may want to demonstrate use of a financial software like QuickBooks or comparable)

List any and all-important licenses and certifications by trade.

Technical skills by trade are important but showcase soft skills too ( examples include problem solving, written skills, verbal skills, leadership and problem solving).

Keep your resume simple! A fancy design is not necessary. Be sure to use a simple interface.

As a beginner, don’t worry if you don’t have a lot of experience yet. Internships and level one position resumes are reviewed knowing you will learn a lot on the job. Good Luck!
